4 Unique Family-Friendly Activities In Woods Hole

With its rich history, pristine beaches, and postcard-worthy views of the Atlantic, Cape Cod has risen the ranks to become one of the top destinations in Massachusetts. One of the favorite places for tourists to visit in Cape Cod is Woods Hole, especially for families. If you are looking for a great place to visit with kids where they can enjoy magnificent views and have unforgettable experiences, Woods Hole is it. Woods Hole is a seaside village that is considered a science hub for recreation, international travel, science learning, and fun. When you visit Woods Hole with your family, these are some of the best things to do.

Get your hands on science

Woods Hole is described by many as an epicenter of scientific research where your kids can learn a lot. Pass by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Exhibit Center, where your kids can learn about the vehicles and tools used by scientists to explore the oceans. They can take a dive in a full-scale replica of the submarine that was used to explore the Titanic. Another great place to go if you love science is the Pierce Center at the Marine Biological Laboratory, where your kids can view Cape Cod marine life and play with a microscope.

Have fun on the beach

As fun as science can be, balancing your vacation activities is important for family travel if everyone is to fully enjoy the experience. To ensure that every member of the family has fun, you can pair your scientific tour of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Exhibit Center with some fun time outside on the beach. Luckily, Woods Hole has various beaches packed with fun activities for all members of your family. Nobska Beach, for example, is just a 15-minute walk from the middle of Woods Hole, and there you can enjoy great swimming and views of both the Nobska Lighthouse and the Vineyard Sound. From the beach, you can also watch ferries cross with the crowds headed to the Vineyard and other hotspots in the area. Another beach your family will love in Woods Hole is Stoney Beach. Grab your nets and start hunting for hermit crabs and starfish on the edge of Stoney Beach, and then build a sand fort to collect your specimens.

Visit the Woods Hole Science Aquarium

One of the oldest aquariums in the US, the Wood Hole Science Aquarium is one of the places that will leave a lasting impression on your kids. The aquarium has more than 140 species of Atlantic marine animals that your kids can view and even interact with. The aquarium has a touch tank, where the kids can have an unforgettable hands-on experience with various sea creatures, such as quahogs and lobsters. Your kids can also have a fantastic seal feeding experience, and see how fish and other sea creatures are cared for closely.

Take the kids to Candy Go Nuts

One of the things kids love most about Woods Hole is visiting the Candy Go Nuts shop. Located on Luscombe Avenue, this wonderful old-fashioned candy shop is like a candy heaven for kids; you can fill your bags and pay by the pound, or have a local ice cream cone to cool you off. If you don’t want to stuff your faces with candy, you can swing by the Quick’s Hole Tavern where you can enjoy tasty meals while watching ferries go in and out of the terminal. At the tavern, you can indulge in some locally sourced seafood like lobster or clams.

Although Woods Hole is tiny in size, it is grand in diversity. You and your family will love the homes, restaurants and shops that look like gingerbread cottages, and – of course – the sandy and pristine beaches.
